EPA RRP Training

Effective April 22, 2010, under the authority of the Toxic Substance Control Act (Section 402(c)(3) of TSCA) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published the final rule (40CFR Part 745) addressing lead-based paint hazards created by renovation, repair and painting (RRP) activities that disturb Lead-Based Paint (LBP) in "target housing" and "child-occupied facilities" built before December 31, 1977.

The new Rule, which is known as the "RRP Rule" affects all firms and professionals that perform renovation, repair, painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and other work for payment that disturb LBP. The Rule requires firms to be certified and all RRP work be performed under the supervision of an RRP trained and certified professional. The EPA requires professionals to attend an 8-hour training course approved by the EPA for training and certification. Both firm and renovator certifications are valid for a period of 5 years after which recertification is required. Violation of the EPA's RRP regulations can result in up to $32,500 in fines.
